Windsor County Fair Steer Pulling Contest, August 27, 2013
We visited the Windsor County, County Fair while on vacation in Maine. One of the highlights was the open distance steer pulling contest (a steer is a castrated bull commonly used for beef). Two steers are put into a harness and tied to a sled weighing 2,500 pounds. They then pull the sled for three minutes and distance is measured.
Steers are not the most cooperative animals, so guidance is necessary from the owner who yells and whips them occasionally. These steers are in the 2,500-2,700 pound weight class. By comparison, a rodeo bull weighs between 1,700-2,000 pounds.
